How to Start an NES Game Collection

If you used to play NES for hours a day when you were a kid, then becoming an NES game collector might be something you would be interested in. Getting started with an NES game collection can be quite difficult. The best way to start a collection is to buy a NES system that comes with two controllers and 20 or so games. Sometimes you can find these on e-bay for $100-$150. Getting started with a few games is much better than trying to gather a collection one game at a time. However, once you've got some of the basic games, buying one at a time is a sure way to guarantee you are getting the most rare games.

Start going to garage sales and thrift stores as they sometimes have games for as little as 25 cents. Keep in mind you don't need a duplicate of a game that you already have unless you know you can sell the game for more than they are selling it for. If a game like Dragon Warrior 3 or Mega Man is being sold for $1 then pick that game up right away even if you already have it. Most people don't realize the value of these old games. They are just getting rid of them when their kid goes to college.

Try to find games that are incorrectly classified on eBay. Sometimes if you are very lucky you can find a game that is put in a sort of odd section on eBay. You can find the game and hope no one else is searching specifically for that title. eBay has made this much more difficult than it used to be; however, this can still be pulled off.

Try to buy games in bulk. You can often get a huge discount by buying 50 or 100 games at a time. Especially mom and pop game stores that are going out of business will sometimes sell at cost just to get rid of their inventory. Since gamestop and eb games seem to be buying up all the competition and won't sell these games, sometimes you can get a really great deal.

Don't ever feel pressured into buying a game. Just because someone at the store says a game is worth $75 does not mean it is worth $75. Even if they bring out a magazine, check out online stores before you make a commitment to buy.

Always check the rarity lists on line. There are some great standard rarity lists out there that can tell you how many copies of the game were made and how rare the game is today. There are proto-type NES and other very, very rare games that can be worth a ton of money. It's not unheard of to pay hundreds up to a thousand dollars for an NES game. Just understand that you aren't the only fanatic out there.

NES game collecting is worth the amount if work you are going to have to put into it. Just keep in mind that everyone who comes over to your house who is the age of 20-30 years old is going to remember playing the NES system when they were a kid. Having a NES system and games in your college dorm room can be a great way to hang out with friends. Also, there is a good chance that the value of these games will increase as systems and cartridges continue to break over time. Pick them up now in case the price goes up!
