Video Game Industry Lessons For Product Managers

So I can only speak for myself, but back in the day I used to be quite good at video games - you know, the big stand alone game units that you could only find in arcades. Since then, I've tried to keep up with the home game consoles, but I must confess to having lost my skills.

These days I have to confine myself to an occasional run at Half-Life just to reassure myself that I still have it. Which brings up an interesting point, wouldn't be be great to be a product manger at a video game company?

The Video Game Industry

If you are the type of person who is easily impressed by big numbers, then try this one out for size. The video game Grand Theft Auto IV brought in over $300M in a single day when it was released. That was double what the most recent Batman movie brought in the day that it opened.

The industry and its product managers do have their challenges - things are getting tougher. The cost and complexity of developing games are rising with every new release. Oh, and you can imagine just how fickle video game customers are - one bad release and your product line could be done for.

What Does It Take To Have A Successful Video Game Product?

Success in the video game industry depends on a combination of solid risk management and savvy research and development. This part of the business will never change. However, the way that video games are sold and how they are being distributed is undergoing a fundamental change that is affecting all product managers.

One new model for video game manufacturers involves subscription online offerings. In this product offering, users can download the game code for free and then they pay a monthly charge to be allowed to connect to servers that generate the game playing environment where all subscribers can play at the same time.

One of the largest video game manufactures, Activision Blizzard, already generates more than $1B in revenue and more than $500M in profit from its World of Warcraft subscription business. Clearly this is the wave of the future.

Another new focus is what gaming experts are calling the "casual" market. This is how video game product managers are trying to expand their potential customer base - they are trying to create products that appeal to game players who don't have a lot of time to learn complicated rules. One of the better examples of a popular casual game is Guitar Hero.

Another key decision that video game product managers need to make is to pick which game console they will develop games for. For example. games made for the Nintendo DS can be developed more cheaply than those for consoles, manufactures can experiment far more cheaply in ways that they can't do for the PlayStation or the Wii.

The Future Of Video Game Products

The video game business is a rough business to be a product manger in. Publishers need to sell about one million copies of a game on the PS3 or Xbox 360 just to break even. This constant pressure to be successful is generating creative new ideas for product managers.

One new idea that has only just reciently started to show up in video games is the idea of in-game advertising. Sponsered ads can show up on billboards, on character's clothing, or even as shopfronts in the environment. Because so many of these games are online, ads can be changed over time - nothing is fixed.

An additional way to make money that is just starting to be implemented is that the game is free for gamers to play, but they must pay for extra items such as new gear for their players. With certain market sectors, e.g. teen girls, this can produce rich rewards.

Final Thoughts

Every product manager yearns for the opportunity to be responsible for a product that is truly popular and video games sure seem to fit that description. However, the video game industry is a rough and tumble battlefield that punishes products that fall behind and insists on constant innovation.

Even if you are not working in the video game industry, you can still learn from what they are doing. Moving as much of your product support and update process online to reduce costs and boost customer interaction is one innovation that we can all explore doing.

If product mangers can find ways to work innovations from the video game into how they are managing their products, then they will have have found yet another way that great product managers make their product(s) fantastically successful.

Computer Video Games

As the video game industry continues to grow in popularity (home consoles), there are still video games being produced and sold for the personal computer and the Macintosh computer. These video games were popular prior to the development of home consoles such as PlayStation, Nintendo, Sega and Xbox. Video games released for the home computer and laptops include genres such as war simulation, cards, sports simulations and puzzles. Some of the most popular war simulation games have been plane simulation games because of the ability to purchase a joystick and actually fly the plane. Another popular genre of simulation games for the home computer and laptop is that of driving simulation games.

Computer video games can be purchased at electronic stores, on the Internet, or played for free on gaming websites. They can be downloaded or uploaded, depending on the nature of the game, and can be saved directly to the computer or to a digital card or external hard drive. It all depends on the nature of the game and the preferences of the gamer. Some of the most popular video games for the personal computer have also been released for home console systems like PlayStation or Xbox and vice versa. People can bring their laptop everywhere they go and sometimes they want to bring their video games with them. So, if they like a certain game that they play on their home console, they can purchase that game's version for their computer.

Popular console games that can also be played on the computer include Call of Duty, Madden NFL, The Sims, Star Wars, Halo, MLB Front Office Manager, Brothers in Arms, NHL 09 and many more. When you purchase video games for your computer they do not come with all the accessories needed to play them. Most video games can be played with the click of a mouse and by using a handful of keys on the computer's keyboard. But, certain games such as Flight Simulator will require the use of a joystick to effectively play the game. The joystick does not come with the game, which means you will have to purchase it separately.

There is a downside to playing video games on your computer. If the game is one where you play individual sporting events, advance to different levels, or unlock different items then you will need to save the game's data or lose your place in the game. This might turn into a problem if you wind up having technical problems with your computer. There will be no problem with saving the game to your computer's hard drive but if the computer becomes infected with a virus or other harmful item then your game's data might be in jeopardy. Or, if the game freezes during game play then you might never be able to play that game again unless you reinstall it onto your system. This means that you will lose your data and have to start all over again, which can be extremely frustrating, especially if you have put a ton of time into the game. Do not forget though that these same problems can arise from playing video games on home consoles.

What Video Game Testers Actually Do For Their Job

Video game testers are often perceived as not having to endure the normal work requirements found in most jobs - that they are not required to work on a regular basis in an office or company workspace; that they get to make a great deal of money while playing games and telling people that they are having fun while doing so. The truth isn't quite so idealistic or glamorous. However, for those that are willing to work hard and put in the effort to develop their career, becoming a video game tester can be the best decision they ever made.

Game testers have jobs that enable them to make an excellent living - top testers earn up to 80k to 100k a year once they have racked up several years of experience and have advanced in their testing and technical expertise. Though entry level wages are closer to 15-20 and hour, for those that stick with it and make a serious effort at building a career as a professional video game tester, the rewards are great.

While video game testers have great jobs, and while they are not like most of your typical 9-5 workers, they do in fact have to get up each day, go to the office or testing lab and work on whatever projects have been assigned to them by their test leads - and projects almost always entail tight deadlines, particularly in the game and software industry. Game testers must exercise and test games rather than simply play them, and demonstrate that as professionals, they can go through a set test of test cases and scenarios, following specific configurations and processes, to test the game thoroughly and expose as many bugs as possible.

This process makes video game testers one of the most critical roles in the gaming industry. Video game testers contribute directly to the process and success of creating a game that is fun, playable, and functions precisely as it was designed to function.

For anyone interested in becoming a full time video game tester, the process starts by making sure they are ready for everything the career asks of them. Video game testers essentially learn to analyze something that is supposed to be entertainment. Video game testers work closely with various different builds of a game, writing down every bug that you encounter as you play the game and preparing various reports that will tell the other people involved in the creation of the game what you have encountered.

Game testers follow close protocols for how to test and report bugs and then repeat the process whenever a new build is released. Then may spend hours working on one menu or days on one level and when the deadlines get tight, they are often expected to work long hours.

However, what draws so many people to becoming a game tester is that they will often get to work in the same offices as the people behind the biggest and best new games on the market. They will be able to learn from the best testers and programmers in the industry. In due time, video game testers gain valuable experience and, if they choose, are able to establish a long-term career for themselves that moves beyond testing into roles such as game design, programming, QA management, graphic arts, or even the producer.

Video Game Rental - Rent Video Games Online - Try Before You Buy

It amazes me how many console gamers out there don't get into the online video game rental world. I can understand that it's a quite a leap above renting games from local video stores, but now is the time to start taking advantage of these services. Games for the new console systems are reaching up to $60 a piece. Buying 1 game a month would put you at around $720 a year in video game purchases. If, however, gamers opted to rent games for $22 a month, they would be spending roughly a third of that amount per year.

There are a few companies out there that offer video game rentals. However, it is important to research each company before deciding. Which of the rental services have the fastest service? Which guarantee that the game will be in stock? Which of these companies carry the largest console support? These are all questions that will determine which company suits best. Each company has around the same pricing plan (approximately $22 for renting 2 games out at one time). The more important question, however, is which company has the fastest shipping. This is one of the most important details of a company that rents games, especially an online company. It is important to be receiving the game in 2 days or less time.

The benefits of signing up with an online video game rental service is quite obvious: gamers are given the option of trying out games before purchasing them without ever playing them. For example, when a new game comes out, there is usually quite a bit of hype surrounding this game. People are talking about it at school, discussing it on game forums, and seeing ads on TV. Sometimes the critics get involved and pump it up even more with abnormally high ratings weeks before the game is released. Almost too often do we find these games to be a letdown. Of course there are exceptions, like the guitar hero series and half-life, but there are also plenty of games that just do not play as great as they were made out to be. As an active subscriber to an online video game rental service, there is never any need to get upset over a $60 purchase. Simply send the game back into the mail and receive the next game in the que.

Let's discuss a different scenario. Let's say that you rent a game that you fall in love with. Instead of holding on to the and having it out for 2 months at a time, you can have the option of purchasing the game at a discounted price. You will receive the box and the manuals in the mail with no shipping charge, and you will receive the next game on your rental que. This is great because not only are you playing the latest released games, you are also beating the system by testing the game out for yourself and purchasing it later at a lower price.

Some games out there are only worth beating once. This is where the online video game rental services really shine You play the game for a week, beat it, and have no desire to play it again. The game simply has no reply value. This could be dependent on a lot of factors, like no multi-player, very linear story, etc. but the fact is that $60 wasn't spent on a 1 week game. The game goes back into the mail and another game is received and ready to be played.

Acquiring video game testing experience before you submit your resume and begin interviewing for your first your first paying video game tester job will greatly improve your odds of getting hired, and open many more doors for you. This will be a huge plus on your resume, and will gain you experience and perspective on how to actually test video games.

As you work your way through the book, apply what you read to the game you are testing. Practice creating spreadsheets of Test Scenarios and Test Cases based on the guidelines you can find in any good book on software testing. Create practice test plans for the game you are playing and analyzing. Practice writing bugs using a good bug filing template, which you can also find in good software testing books.

o Getting Experience with Game Development - There are many good resources to pick up a few fundamentals on game design. Learning a few things, even practicing creating a simple game or designing a level, will look great on your resume, and make you a much better video game tester

Video Game Tester Jobs - 7 Simple Steps Towards Getting Hired As a Video Game Tester

Video Game tester jobs are highly sought after by those of us who love playing video games. What gamer wouldn't love to play and test games for a living? But if you have never worked in the video game industry, landing your first game testing job can seem a bit intimidating. What skills are needed? Where does one apply? What should be put on one's resume? What about interview preparation? Don't fret - we all have to start somewhere, and if you are determined to start a video game tester career, there is a simple, yet highly successful process that anyone can use to make it happen.

By following this 7 step process, you will land your first game testing job. This process is what we have discovered to be the most bullet-proof method of landing your first game tester job, as well as for starting a career as a video game tester.

Getting Hired as a Video Game Tester in Seven Simple Steps

First, you simply must enjoy playing games. Many people think being a games tester would just be an easy job, but without a sincere passion for gaming, just showing up for a paycheck simply doesn't work. If you don't sincerely love playing video games, then when the time to ship the game draws close, and everyone is putting in long hours to find all those remaining bugs in the game being tested, you won't be enjoying yourself.

Second, learn that video games are software, and should be tested as such. Learn how to test the game as software, not simply a game. Discovered bugs aren't simply a problem with the game play; they are most likely code bugs in the software. Learn the fundamentals of software testing, and you will find a lot more bugs, and soon become the leading bug finder on your team. This will make you a rockstar game tester, and the jobs will come to you as your reputation as a video game tester grows.

Third, don't limit yourself to testing only one gaming platform or company. Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo are the big three, but if you limit yourself to only one of those, you limit the game tester jobs and opportunities that are available to you. Learn to use the PC as a gaming platform if you don't already, and you will rapidly increase your video game tester job opportunities.

Fourth, acquire some game testing experience before building your resume. There are numerous video game beta tester opportunities that are free to apply for, and although they are unpaid, you will gain valuable experience.

Fifth, learn a few things about the video game industry. Having a basic understanding of what it takes to design, market and ship a game will impress potential employers to no end, and put you way ahead of the pack of ordinary game testers.

Sixth, determine which company or companies you would like to work for. Many jobs are on-site, meaning you will have to live or work where the actual company is, but many companies will hire people to test their games at home, on their own systems, so your geographic location doesn't have to be an obstacle.

Seventh, after following the first 6 steps, it will be time to build your resume and cover letter. You will now be able to really showcase your passion for video games, as well as show your potential employer you know something about game testing. This will give you a significant advantage against other entry-level game testers, and insures you will be hired for your first video game tester job!

How Beta Video Game Testing Can Fast Track Your Game Testing Career

Many conceive of beta video game testing as simply signing up for free opportunities to play games still under development in the comfort of their own home, writing down any bugs they come across and getting to play the content weeks or even months before the rest of the world. And indeed, much of beta testing consists of just that. More often than not, however, beta testing is performed by people working directly for game design companies, and involves testing the game immediately following what is termed code-complete. Those hired to perform beta testing work off of specific sets of test cases, and will often review specific parts of the game repetitively, composing bug reports to describe whatever issues they may encounter.

However, much beta testing is still done for free, by unpaid volunteers. How can you leverage this into a paid game testing position? The answer is that experience is experience, whether paid or not. By starting off as an unpaid beta tester, you will be building your resume for when you do apply for a paid game testing position. Each game that you beta test becomes one more item to include on your resume - as well as the number of bugs you found and filed.

By investing the time and effort into developing marketable game testing skills by performing unpaid beta game testing, you will be building a firm foundation for a paid game testing career, whether beta testing or any other testing methodology involved in testing video games. Keep in mind that once you are hired for a paid beta game testing position, you may be required to put in long hours of testing, as this stage in the product cycle is often the most intensive.

The investment in time and effort you put into beta video game testing will really pay off in terms of beginning to learn the process of designing and building video games. This will allow you to create a career for yourself in more advanced areas, such as game design, game illustration, or even programming. The opportunities that will open up for you are truly limitless.

Once you have gotten your foot in the door performing paid video game testing, plan on investing a year or two of hard core testing before moving up to the next level. Those who prove themselves by filing a lot of great bugs, as well as expanding their testing and design skill sets, will find that when an opening does come for a higher level position, they will be first in line. Those who are willing to put in the hard work and do well at the tasks assigned to them will sooner or later be given the opportunity to move on to roles with more responsibility.

In short, begin signing up for beta video game testing opportunities today, and you will be on the fast track to a great career as a paid video game tester. You will discover that the more you put into it, like anything worthwhile, the more you will get out of it. Eventually the rewards will come, in terms of being able to get paid doing what many consider to be a dream job.

5 Tips to Becoming a Video Game Tester and Getting Paid to Play Video Games

Do you want to know how to get paid to play games? As in get paid to play video games? Well you've come to the right place if the answer to that question was "yes". The way that people that get paid to play video games make money is by becoming video game testers and working for game companies to make sure game releases are top notch. But how can you become a video game tester and actually make money by at home video game testing? Here are five simple tips that will keep you on the right track:

Work your way up from lower companies, like indie developers and online Flash game makers, to the big dogs like Insomniac or Bandai. It'll take a while, for sure, but you should just keep trucking away until you're fairly well respected. And after you're well respected you will really be raking in!

Don't expect a big payday right away- you can certainly earn $30 per hour when you get the hang of it, but initially you'll be working for lower rates at about $10-$15 per hour. That may not sound too exciting, but what other job lets you sit back and relax doing something you enjoy to make money like being a video game tester? What other job will let you get paid to play games? Video game testers definitely have it made when you look at it from this light, no?

You might also want to expand your resume in another way. Work a little elsewhere in the field. By this I mean simply try your luck at learning C++ or another programming language. Having the skills of a game developer will give you a better shot at getting hired to get paid to play games.

Be well prepared for rejection. The simple fact is that game developers don't particularly have a need for beta game testers and at home video game testing is so scarce because of this. But if you are really persistent and keep heading out there to find the jobs instead of waiting for them to come to you, then you will almost certainly be getting paid to play games in no time!

Game Testing Jobs - Becoming a Top-Gun Video Game Tester by Learning Software Testing Fundamentals

An important step towards getting hired for all the game testing jobs you want is to become a really a great video game tester - the star of the team, or at least co-star. Achieving that level of competency involves moving beyond the what - finding bugs - to the how. How, exactly does one uncover flaws in the game? Ultimately, most bugs will fall into two categories - either design and game play bugs, or code bugs.

Understanding that you aren't simply testing a video game, but rather, are testing software, will help a great deal in finding and isolating bugs to hand off to the developers to fix. There are universal principles to the discipline of testing software, and when applied to testing video games, understanding these fundamentals will skyrocket your bug count - and your salary. You will then find employers begging to hire you, and will have all the game testing jobs you could possibly want.

Software testing is ALL about finding bugs - the more the merrier, the earlier, the better. "File bugs early and often" is a great philosophy to bring to the table, as the earlier the bugs are filed in the development process, the easier and cheaper it is to fix them. But as with so many things, what is easy in theory is more difficult in practice - it isn't until all the code is hooked together, "integrated", that end-to-end testing of the game and game play is possible. So most game testing jobs are advertised in the alpha and beta release cycles - but the closer one starts in the alpha phase, the better.

At this stage in the game (pun intended), it really pays off to perform what is called integration testing. Do all the major elements of the game integrate well together? Or is sound out-of-sync with video? Does player speech sync with mouth movements? Are sound effects in sync with player action? Does the game save to disk, if designed to? Is the game compatible with all supported operating systems? These are just a few of the high-level areas one will want to investigate.

Getting down to the nitty-gritty, one should design a matrix that covers all major elements of the game and integration, then break each of those areas down further. As an example, consider item storage. What are the various means of acquiring items? Buying, finding, looting, and trading are the major ones; don't forget quest rewards. Once acquired, do they stay in storage upon exiting the game and then returning? Can you trade with other players? If you drop it, does it stay dropped? Can you sell items that you found? Made? Traded? Stole? As you can see, the possibilities are truly endless.

Game testing jobs consist of considering these details and possibilities. The strategy to deal with such a huge number of possibilities is to build a test case matrix based on how often a given scenario or test case is likely to happen. One then categorizes the individual test cases and scenarios based on priority: P0, P1, P2, etc. So obviously, buying and selling an item and ensuring it stays in storage are pretty essential functions to the game - these would be P0. Being able to sell a quest item you stole from a looted corpse, less so - say, a P1.

These are just a few examples of applying basic principles of software testing to video game testing. Applying these principles will drastically explode your bug count, making you stand head and shoulders above your typical video game testing peers. Adopt these principles, and learn the fundamentals of software testing, and the number of game testing jobs you can get hired for will simply explode.

There are a lot of people in this world who are absolutely passionate about video gaming. Gaming is one of the most popular cultures amongst the members of the younger generation. However, gaming as we see has taken all the generations by storm. People from all age groups indulge in video gaming and the competition just gets fiercer.

Video gaming is a multibillion industry. This justifies the fact that video gaming is a big part of the technology Industry which has attracted millions of gamers from around the world. You will be amazed by the kinds of imagination deployed to develop the games. Videogames will take you to the heights of imagination which you would not have thought of before.

You would be surprised to see the size of the diehard fan-clubs of the games like Need for Speed, Grand Theft Auto, Splinter Cell, Hit-man, The Godfather etc. Millions of gamers compete against each other across the globe by joining the games online.

There are plenty of gaming championships and events taking place all across the world. The gaming population is increasing by thousands everyday.

There are many people in this world who dream of having an exclusive video game environment of their own. This would be the place which they call haven. The gamers would love to station up in their video game environment and focus on their game without being disturbed.

A video game environment will be the place which will be exclusively utilized for the purpose of video gaming only. For the gamers who play cosmic games, this haven will represent their own spaceship. It could get so emotionally attached with our lives.

Some people play video games to relax their minds and to unwind themselves. It helps them take their minds away from their works. This type of therapy is accepted by millions of people around the world. The video game environment is almost like a place of medication for them.

There are few things which a gamer should follow religiously. Never let the game addiction get the better off you. Do your gaming strictly during the hours scheduled by you. Do not overstep this line if you do not wish to land into trouble starting with your family.

You will need to sit and communicate with your parents about your passion for video gaming. They would understand it better if you could maybe show them a copy of your timetable which you have set as your gaming schedule.

All the gamers will need to consider their video game environment as a gaming haven. Your video game zone is never a getaway spot to hide from people nor is it a place to work or the place to sleep. It is not a place for you to smoke either. You will need to maintain the exclusive nature of your video game Zone.

Make sure that you do not end up converting your video game environment as the shell around you.

A video game environment is strictly a place for you to concentrate and focus on your game. There is no better feeling than when you are climbing up the levels in your game.

Paid to Play Video Games - The "Video Game Tester" Fantasy

Every day around the world, some gamer out there is thinking; "wouldn't it be great If I got paid to play video games?" To them, it's just a fantasy and they don't take the thought seriously. That's too bad because it is very possible to get paid to play video games. If you continue to read this article, you'll find out how.

Before you understand why anyone would want to pay you to play video games, you need to understand how the gaming industry works. The gaming industry is a high-stakes industry, with a lot of money on the line; $50 billion a year is taken in by this industry. A singular flaw that slips past programmers and hits the video game market can cause severe consequences for any company; for instance, mass returns, complaints about the company's lack of dedication, negative word-of-mouth publicity as one gamer tells the next and so on and so forth. The result of one simple bug or glitch can cost a company millions of dollars and cause employees to lose their jobs. It may be a bit extreme, but that's how serious the video game industry is.... One screw up with one game could end it all.

Here's how this type of catastrophe is avoided -- game developers pay video game testers to go through their game and look for bugs and glitches. They also pay them for general feedback on the game's interface, design, and it's overall performance & "fun" rating .

The fact of the matter is game developers and programmers approach video games in a very different matter than regular gamers do. Their main focus is writing code and developing the game's engine, not playing the game itself, which is exactly why they need video game testers. The testers job is to basically play the game like a machine and tediously go through all the different levels many, many times while searching for problematic bugs and glitches.

Video game testers can work directly with the programmers and developers, but generally speaking, most seasoned testers prefer to work at home rather than at a video game testing center. The company will send the games they need tested via snail-mail. The video game tester will then sit down and play the game using the instructions given, making crucial notes along the way. If a bug is found while playing, they must know what actions led up to the triggering of the bug and document those things accurately; he can;t just say "there's a bug in the game."

If you're interested in becoming one, I urge you to to explore the different resources that are out there. There are certain characteristics you need to have in order to get paid to play video games. Most of them are quite easy to improve upon, while others, not to much. Either way though, the benefits of being a professional video game tester are tremendous; especially when you consider that you're doing something you're passionate about and making good money at the same time.

Where Can I Find a Job For Video Game Testing?

There are varieties of ways you can use to find a job as a video game tester. But before you begin your search for as a video game tester, I need to ask you a question. Do you have the capabilities to conquer a video game testing assignment? Game testing involves some technical-know-how. I have written them down to get you familiar with the works of a video game tester.

Roles of a Video Game Tester

The work of a video game tester is to detect glitches made at various levels of game production. To be frank, video game testing is not an easy task, especially if you don't have any experience about playing games. Video game manufacturers believe that if they send their games into the market without doing any standard testing, it may not be bought by video game players. Due to this, they seek the services of video game testers to enable them detect these bugs, while on their own part they edit it and send it into the market for consumers to exploit.

Compensation

A video game tester could earn over $45,000 working full time in a year, though some video game testing jobs pay hourly. One can earn $20-$150 per hour testing video games. If you are able to detect bugs, you also paid more benefits in addition to the agreed amount for the games you are testing.

Where to find Video Game Testing Jobs

This brings us to the main issue of this article. Let's say you've known the works of a video game tester at this stage. If you've made up your mind to start a career as a game tester, then you could go ahead to discover the sources of video game testing jobs.

One of the ways to find a video game testing job is to find one at video game manufacturer's websites. I guess you know them; they are Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo, Sony, Code Masters and the rest of others. You might be lucky to find opportunities at their websites.

Another way I will, mostly, recommend is to approach video game companies. Tell them your capabilities, the games you own and the ones you've played. Convince them on why you would be able to make a good testing job, once the games are assigned to you. Luckily, you could get one. The games can either be computer games or video games, no matter the kind of games you are assigned to test, take the testing seriously and don't waste time in sending your feedbacks to the company, once you are through with testing.

Final Word

Video game testing is not an easy task but once you get used to them, I assure you that you would get to love the job. There are some ecourses made to get you acquainted with video game testing, they would be helpful in assisting you through the various stages of completing the works of a video game tester successfully. If you are able to practice with this ecourse, it would guard you in your first assignment.

X Box System Video Games

With the arrival of the next generation of X-box video games, the system for buying games has changed forever. Before the world of interactive online video game consoles, buyers had to go down to the local toy store to find the newest game. It was impossible to add updates to the games, and players were unable to try out a sample of the game they were thinking of buying. However, today, video game consoles such as the X-box are increasingly interactive, making it possible to surf the web, watch movies, listen to music, and play games on what is essentially a computer.

Users can now download as many video games as they want from websites that bring together X-box 360 users from around the world. These games are available for players to try a sample before deciding on whether or not they're going to buy the full version. Players can enjoy games at a lower cost, as the video game companies don't have to worry about transportation costs or the middle man anymore. Players will be able to enjoy endless options for their high tech video game consoles.

Users can also download the latest movies, music, and other programs for their X-box. This new system is one of the most innovative ways to play video games. Many video game consoles can simply store the information on a hard disk. This means the end of using CDs and DVDs that can be damaged by wear and tear after just a couple of months of use.

Many X-box games are now released in stages, with users downloading the newest chapter or episode as they come out. This is one of the most innovative new developments in the world of video games. Instead of releasing an entire game at once, video game developers can release a game in episodes and offer players a much more interactive game playing experience.

One of the most popular ways to enjoy the X-box 360 is through interactive online gameplay. Download the latest video games and go online to play with friends from around the world. Players who at one time became bored with their games because they were able to beat every level of the computer can now test their skills against the best from around the world. Imagine playing a game of football with an opponent led by a coach like you, who uses a strategy that is difficult to predict. No more patterns to get a touchdown every time.

Game play will never be the same. Users who can now enjoy the latest video game by simply downloading it in the comfort of their own home can now play people from around the world. Enjoy the world of online video games with your X-box console today.

Teaching Children With Video Games

It is often reported that video games can have a negative effect upon children and increase violent tendencies. But I do wonder, do video games really have this impact or is it not just another excuse for the lack of leadership?

Me owning a video game store and being a parent of two now grown boys, both of my sons often had a game controller in their hands at a young age. Both of them could beat Mario by age 2! Both of them also knew what a video card was at a young age. At a young age they both could also type better than many adults.

These two gaming nerds are also now fine young gentlemen with bright careers before them. One has ventured into mechanical engineering and the other is currently pursuing a career in sound engineering. These two interests both stem from their exposure to video games and technology I believe.

Trust me when I say I quite often gave the exposure to all of this high tech gadgetry on my sons some very serious thought. Was gaming going to effect them in a negative way? Would it cause them to react with violent tendencies when frustrated with a game? Would gaming cause them to go out with baseball bats and beat people in the streets?

As this was a major concern I kept a very close eye out for any signs that gaming was having an effect on them. And I did see effects! But not what one would think. What I found was that they were learning to problem solve beyond their age! Their analytical abilities were being exercised along with their desire to exercise these new found abilities. And all of this new interest was coming from playing video games!

Where I had been looking for negative effects on their young minds I never once considered the positive effects that gaming may have! I will admit that there were times when they got frustrated at a game and I had to tell them to put it away. But frustration is a normal emotion when confronting a problem that is not easily solved. I am also guilty of having controllers sprout wings and them magically fly across the room. When it gets to this stage it is time to put the games away and turn their attention to other things, such as exercise.

With moderation, gaming can teach an array of mental and motor skills.

For the most part these two young heathens were learning to use their brains and to teach themselves. And the best part was is they enjoyed it! Instead if restricting their gaming I chose to use this technology as a tool for teaching them

Their interest in video games caused them to ask how are video games created? How could they possibly take their own ideas and make them into a game? You might ask what is the benefit of this? Just think about it, games are digital, and to work with it you must use math. Programming is nothing but algebra put to use. If they wanted to program they needed to excel in math and learn new concepts. Also in programming you must be precise and cannot rush through development. You must create and coordinate a plan. And then you must put that plan into action! Look at all of the abilities that these two young boys have just taken an interest in!

As a Parent you have to take the responsibility and monitor the game play. I believe 2 hours of game play should be the maximum amount of time before a child should turn their attention towards exercise and other things. I also think gaming has far more positive effects on children than watching television does. There isn't a whole lot of thought processing going on when one veg's to the television. Just like anything video gaming can be abused and needs to be controlled. But with the proper games, parental guidance, and proper scheduling you can turn their love for gaming into a learning experience. New interests can be quickly developed by utilizing various game genres. You as the parent must take control of the situation and not always trust the child to make the correct judgment without leadership. They are not born with good judgment but learn it through experience. As with anything else they do in their young life they need guidance and will look to you for this.

So do not let all of the hype of video games being evil scare you. They can be a wonderful teaching tool if used correctly. Be sure to give your guidance when selecting new games. Read reviews and be sure that the games that you allow them to play are for their age range. You do not want your 5 year old playing Grand Theft Auto for example. This game is meant for an older group and is quite violent.

As long as you are the responsible parent you can take away any fear of video games having a negative effect upon your children and turn gaming to their advantage. Good leadership and and a little common sense will go much further than turning them loose for days on end to have video games baby sit for you. This is where gaming can lead to trouble. But it also is not the game's fault but rather the abuse of the game. I guess there is an off switch on the gaming consoles for a reason. Do not be afraid to use it!

Earn Cash Playing Video Games

It's the ultimate gamer's dream- to find a way to make a living from playing video games. And the best part is- it's actually possible!

Here are the top ways to turn your video game know-how into cold, hard cash:

1. Become a game tester. Beta testers work for game companies to help work out bugs before the game is released to the public. Companies like Nintendo hire game testers frequently, but the competition for these gigs is fierce. However, game testing can also get your foot in the door for other jobs within a game company.

2. Play for Pay. Some "casual game" companies online offer cash or prizes for frequent players. These games, often single or two-player games like card games, word puzzles and mazes, make money from advertizing and many give out part of their earnings to players. If you often play things like Solitaire or Mahjong on your coffee break, switching to Pay-for-Play sites can turn your time waster into a moneymaker.

3. Win money in online games. Some of the bigger online casual game companies offer tournaments where you can win cash and prizes, everything from gift certificates to physical items they will ship to your home. There are also real-life game tournaments sponsored by major companies that you might try entering. You have to be good to win, though. If you don't get first place, you don't get to take home the money.

4. Create your own games. Game development is a lucrative industry. If you can program games, you can find a career working for one of the majors. Or you can strike out on your own. Some developers make games designed to be used on established systems that are then sold to major companies. Others design games to be played on any computer system and sell the games themselves. A growing market for games is online and mobile applications. Developing simple games for Facebook or the iPhone could bring in loads of money if the game is a hit.

5. Become a Character Farmer. This is the hidden underbelly of multiplayer online games. People pursuing this method of moneymaking develop characters in online games, earning in-world currency and collecting accessories as they go, then sell the character or the items they have acquired for real-world cash. Customers are people who like the game but don't want to spend the time building up a low-level character or searching for paltry stashes of gold until they can acquire enough to buy what they want.

6. Cash in on Second Life. Linden Labs' Second Life is one of the few online ventures that actively encourages members to create and sell new things within the game world. Some entrepreneurs have made millions in real-world cash by developing real estate, opening shops selling clothing or accessories of their own design or holding events within the Second Life world.

7. Write about your gaming. Blogs and articles that give tips and strategies for playing popular games are booming. If you style yourself as an expert, you can develop a following and get paid to write about how you consistently beat the game or other players.

As you can see, there are many options for making money from your video game habit. So next time someone tells you to stop playing video games and get to work- you can tell them that you ARE working!

Wish You Could Get More Video Games For Less Money? You CAN!

According to a survey on Gamespot, the average person buys at least one game a month. Some buy as many as 4 games a month. For simplicity, however, we're going to just focus on those people that buy one game a month. What I'm going to show you is the simplicity of renting video games online and how you can save hundreds every single year by doing so.

Let's say you buy one game a month at $59.99 ($60 for easy math). That's $720 a year! To me, that's a lot of money. Now, let's be fair and say you turn around and sell that game for $25. That's a return of $300. So 750 - 300 = $450. That means you're losing over $400 a year. That's insane! That's a lot of money to just give away. Now, what if I said, you could easily cut this cost in at least HALF by simply renting games online. Bare with me...There are TONS of benefits to this and I'm about to go over them in a really super easy manner to makes sure you leave this article completely informed of this terrific service. I'm going to go over three topics: how much it costs, what if you want to keep the game, and how much time can you save.

Firstly and most importantly, how much does this cost. Well, it depends on the service you choose. A good solid plan can be about $15/mo. This adds up to only $180/yr! First of all, that's only $15 per month which means you never have to pay $60 in a single month. That's money in your pocket right away (no worrying about trying to make SOME of your money back). Obviously there are different plans. Depending on your plan, you'll pay more or less. The reason I'm talking about a $15 plan is because this means you pick one game and keep it for as long as you want. Since in my scenario, we were buying one game a month, it's safe to assume, you'll want one game a month with this plan. So if you keep the game a month, and trade it back for a different game each month, it's only $15/mo. Now, if you finish the game in less time than a month, you can trade it in sooner for the same price. Let's say you play a game in only 2 weeks. You can technically play 2 games, that month for still only $15/mo. What a deal! Other plans can include 2 games at a time or even 3 or 4 games at a time. Obviously these cost a lot. You can usually find a 2 game at a time plan for only $22 on certain sites which is still way less than you'd pay for only 1 game a month at retail price!

Now let's say you want to keep the game. The bigger game rental sites will let you pay for the game once you have it and then send your next rental game. That means if you like buying games, you only pay for the games you absolutely love! Everything else, send them back! This also allows the flexibility of finding a game that you hate and returning it the next day for your next rental while still only paying $15/mo. What a deal! Never buy a game you don't like again!

Lastly, here are some reasons this can save you a lot of your valuable time:

Never leave your house to go to the game store
Never spend your time trying to sell your games at auction sites or retail stores
Never get stuck with a game you don't like that's hard to get rid of.
Never go to the store and have to preorder (you can do this on game rental sites) or find games that aren't in stock.
